I have used Shaklee products since 1994 and am now a distributor. These products are economical, safe, non-toxic and really do the job. I use Basic-D to disinfect almost everything in my home. Basic-H2 is great for cleaning fruit and vegetables. Check out my site at www.shaklee.net/naturalplanet and if you have any questions, I will do my best to help find an answer. This is a great site, keep up the great work.

No so sure you have your facts right about bleach exposure. Often people confuse laundry bleach with the "Chlorine". There is a big difference. I can not find any data supporting your bleach statement as it relates to household bleach.

Wow, Teresa. 3-4 hours every day? That's an awful lot! I suppose your employer isn't very concerned about the effect bleach has on the animals either. My advice for what to change starting tomorrow would be to get one of those surgical masks, wear it, and make sure you're wearing gloves too. My second piece of advice would be to find out how much your employer spends on bleach and go the financial way. Everyone is looking to save money right now. Show your boss that a highly concentrated germicide - like Shaklee's Basic G - would be cheaper than bleach and it kills more pathogens. You can also head over to greenseal.org to find a list of green seal cleaners for your purposes. Your goal would be to find something highly concentrated that would be cheaper than bleach once diluted.

Also, if your animal shelter is supported by public funds, or if it's a non-profit, I'd check with your local city or county's green initiatives (most of them are through the waste or water treatment programs). They may have incentives or ways to help local institutions make green initiatives. It's worth a shot!

I too have a question about bleach. I use bleach to clean the kennels in our animal shelter. I spend about 3-4 hours each day surrounded by the fumes. what can i do to help with this matter? my job is not very concerned about my being around it all the time.

Can you use Borax on colored clothes? Or will it turn them white? I'd like to use a soap that also disinfects, but not if it's going to bleach them.

Teresa and Kateri, I'm afraid I haven't found anything that I would confidently recommend. A big part of that is because of the bureaucracy involved. I'm afraid school systems and sanitation departments have pretty strict testing and tons of red tape. It's hard to get changes made. I'm a little surprised that they would use bleach (toxic if swallowed, even in small amounts) with anything from the kitchen, but I don't have the 'golden ticket' for changes to be made. I would recommend checking out Green Seal to see if they've certified anything for this purpose. Their certification is highly recognized and would help push changes through the red tape. I'd also check into California school systems and sanitation departments - whatever they use goes through more strict health and environmental requirements than what we use in the rest of the US. I'll try to look into it some more, but so far I've had no luck in finding information.
