March 26, 2008 | Kitchen, Being Green, Cleaning tips
I can’t take credit for this one. I pulled it straight out of National Geographic’s Green Guide this week. Call me lazy, but that’s what happens when you’re 38.5 weeks pregnant…
The question was, what’s the best way to dispose of bacon or other kitchen grease? Raleigh, NC has had a serious problem with sewage backups, due in large part to people pouring grease down the drain or down the toilet. It builds up over time and clogs the city’s pipes and waste management systems, to the point that they’ve banned the installation of garbage disposals on new home construction.
So here it is, folks. The most eco-conscious way to get rid of nasty grease (other than joining the raw food movement, that is): Scrape as much grease as you can into a preferably unrecyclable container that would otherwise go in the trash. Frozen juice containers are perfect since they won’t melt and they’d have to go in the trash anyway. Then use a paper towel to wipe as much of the grease remnant out of the skillet or pan. Keep the grease can in the freezer and get it back out whenever you need to add to it.
This gets virtually all of your grease into the trash without sending it through your local waste management or water treatment facility. That’s what works for us, so now head over to Shannon’s place for more helpful tips for the week.

Wonderful idea. I never thought of a juice can. And keeping it in the freezer till full makes so much sense.

Hi there
Great site!
I’m wondering if the fat could be used to make seed balls for the birds to eat? Surely they’d love it and the fat would be recycled in the best possible way!
I’d love to hear whether this is a viable solution.

I’ve done this for years, (passed on from my mom) works great! I just keep the same tin can in the fridge, and when it gets too full, just scoop some out into the garbage and keep using. I think a juice container would be too small for me to aim into… I’m a messy cook!

I’m not sure, mudlark!
I’m going to guess you just mix up the room temperature fat with seeds, nuts, bread crumbs, bacon rind, cheese, raisins -whatever the feathered friends that visit your garden like, put it in something like a yogurt pot with a few holes in it and then hang it up once set.
I cooked a chicken tonight - I’ll have a go tomorrow and let you know how it goes………
