Ridding your kitchen of plastics?

April 24, 2008 | Organizing, Food & drink, Being Green

With the worries about the potential danger of plastics on the rise I’ve decided to eliminate a lot of my plastic containers from my kitchen. You know, the ones you use for EVERYTHING! That left me with a big empty cabinet and nothing to put our left overs in. I needed an idea quick, and a thrifty one at that since I can’t afford to go out and buy all glass storage containers! Here is what I came up with…

You know all of those items you buy in glass jars, use and then toss the jar in the recycle bin? Why not rinse it reuse it! That’s what I’ve started doing. Our applesauce, spaghetti sauce, jelly, salad dressing and peanut butter all come in glass jars. We have started washing these out and running them through a dishwasher cycle and using them to store all sorts of leftovers!

If you just can’t bear the thought of putting your leftover peas in a glass pickle jar, no matter how many times it was washed, there is another thrifty option! Most major stores sell jars with lids used for canning jams and such. They are inexpensive and come in a few different sizes. I plan to pick up a few sets of the smaller jars myself!

I still store a lot of food in plastic, but make sure I don’t put it in the microwave. Or run it through the dishwasher. Usually. But boy, it is hard to get rid of the stuff!

Well, duh. I have been saving glass jars off and on for years, then recycling them and starting over. It took you to say “replace your plastics with these!” This is why I read you. Thanks.

this is what i have recently started doing too, more for storing pantry items like rice, flour, choc chips, etc. but my question for the food that comes in them, what about the lids? Do the lids contain BPA or phtlates? I think they could, but I am not certian & haven’t found much research on it. One thing I have done when the food i store in these touches the top, I place a piece of foil over it before I put the lid on, thinking that would prevent leaching of plastic chemicals in the food. I also have used jars in freezer, just make sure you leave a good space at the top so it won’t burst. Do you all have any research on the lids? Love this site!!

What a great idea! I’ve always been fond of Ball jars.. now they even have little half pint sizes you can use as smaller containers.

    Thanks for the tip!
