The wonders of Alfalfa

June 20, 2008 | Health

Well, this has nothing to do with cleaning. Or with eco-friendly lifestyles. Or really much else other than pure and simple health. I just discovered Alfalfa and I can’t wait to share its wonders with you! Well, maybe I’m a little overexcited, but I can’t help it!

I’ve always been a fan of the sprouts - on salads, sandwiches, in wraps - they add such a nice texture and the flavor is totally unique. But the sprouts have only a very small fraction of the health benefit of alfalfa supplements. The root system of a mature alfalfa plant goes over 20 feet into the ground and mines the soil of its nutrients. It’s been called the ‘father of all foods’ because it brings forth vitamins and minerals in their purest form. What does it do for you?

It’s been used in years past to heal kidney and digestive disorders, arthritis, and  water retention; and in more recent days people use it frequently for anemia, diabetes, indigestion, rheumatoid  and osteo arthritis, bladder disorders, nursing mothers use it to correct low milk supply, women can use it to eliviate PMS, and it can lower cholesterol levels. So as far as I see it, most people I know could benefit from it one way or another.

Shaklee actually has one of the purest forms of the supplement on the market, and you can find it here. Theirs has been around for over 50 years, it’s certified Kosher, and it has spearmint added to it so you can either swallow it with no aftertaste or crush it and mix it with hot water for tea.

I don’t have a comment except I think I could benefit from taking Alfalfa supplements. But - is alfalfa gluten free? Anyone know?

Alfalfa is gluten free, but you’ll want to check labels on products available at your drugstore or health food store. Many companies put other additives in their supplements that may not be gluten free. Shaklee’s Alfalfa complex (linked in the post above) is a gluten-free product and I can personally attest that it does wonders.
