Rust remover

By mudlark • October 7th, 2008

Thanks to Geeky Housewife for her recommendation to use Molasses to remove rust. 1 part molasses to 9 parts water, though it may take as long as a month. It might be faster with pure Coca-Cola (is there anyone out there who didn’t do the rusty nail in Coke experiment in grade school?), but I don’t know that I’d trust Coca-Cola to preserve the finish on anything else. I’m intrigued by the molasses though, and I’ll have to give that a shot.

As for me, I used Shaklee’s Scour Off to remove rust from my car’s door panel.  I use Scour Off for everything from laminate countertops to shower grout to, yes, my car’s exterior. My brand new minivan’s paint job was damaged when the guys in the shop removed my magnetic business sign from the side, let the sign get wet and dirty on the underside, and then reapplied it. Not knowing they’d removed it, I waited until the next wash to take the sign off the side, and that’s when I found it – Rust! Scour Off on a microfiber cloth took it right off without damaging the van’s finish. I don’t think I could have let the molasses sit on it for a month, but I am tempted to try it on the rust on the guest bathroom sink drain.

Aloha Kathy! Love your blog and business concept. Featured you on my blog yesterday… someone has left a nice comment for you! Will be adding you to my resource list. Keep up the good work!

Coca-Cola is good too! Good luck on cleaning your sink drain!

A good DIY attitude adopted here – nice thinking on the coca cola too lol

I think Coca-Cola no so good as many people think. The “Mithbusters” on Discovery Channel proove it. The put slice of meat to Cola for a 2-3 days, and nothing happend. The same situation with rust. So it seems “acid Cola” – it’s mith.
