Ah, the lovely aroma of. . . pet mess

A relatively frequent question we get here has to do with conquering odors. Pet odors, bathroom odors, diaper odors, gym locker odors coming from the laundry room or teenager’s room. How to get rid of it without the help of chemicals?

I think I’d have to put it into a few steps for you.

  1. Identify the source. You can cover up the scent all you like, but as long as the culprit isn’t handled, it’s like putting perfume on a pig. It might mean more frequent laundering, or it may just mean cleaning a certain area or spot more frequently. Also make sure your cleaner is appropriate for the job.
  2. Look for an enzyme-based cleaner. They clean well and they eat away at whatever is causing the odors. If odors are a problem for you, switching to an enzyme may do the trick.
  3. Use something that absorbs odors. You probably know all about baking soda, but newspaper can do the job too, or a plant – the chlorophyll helps to clean the air of odors. A lit candle, even unscented, can remove odors as well.
