Help! Need carpet cleaning help!
By any chance would you know of a good (and all-natural) way to get purple Hello Kitty lip gloss out of cream colored carpet? There are globs of it. And smears. And it’s purple for goodness sake!
Yes, I’m aware that the best medicine is prevention. But now that my 3 year old son experimented with ‘finger painting’ using big sister’s Hello Kitty purple swirly lip gloss, What. Do. I. Do??? (Other than let loose on said son with a vengeance?)
I’m assuming Helly Kitty lip gloss is made of petroleum and lard and things that I’d rather not think about, and that the pretty purple swirly color comes from something like red dye #2 and non-washable chemically-based colorants. Is there a carpet doctor out there who would like the glory for saving my carpet?

Oh no!!!! Try a baking soda/water paste, made kind of thick. When Carter was about 18 months old, he got into the Vick’s VapoRub and rubbed almost a whole tub full into the carpet upstairs. This is what worked the best at getting it out. Good luck!!!!
Oh, bless you, Lara! And bless your little Carter and his experimentation with Vicks VapoRub! Had he not rubbed a tub of it into your carpet you probably wouldn’t have such wonderful advice for me! (I’m sure that’s not what was going through your head as you were scrubbing away…)
I would try naphtha. It is a solvent you can buy at the hardware store. It is used to remove wax, grease, ink and adhesive. It will not affect the carpet.
They say that you have to use a vinegar to take off any stains in a carpet. But I think that will worsen the stain/spot and even the smell. You can try using oxiclean which is available in any supermarkets. Or you can try these website which I found earlier prior to your query http://www.carpetcleaningcoop.com. They offer carpet cleaning service.
I would try a dry paper towel first – that’s the best for getting lipstick off, anyway.
If other stuff doesn’t work, I would use 303 Cleaner and Spot Remover (http://www.303products.com/tech/index.cfm?fuseaction=product.display&Product_ID=431&CFID=46165854&CFTOKEN=14013025). It’s saved me many times and is my last ditch when truly natural things don’t work.
It sounds like a greasy/waxy stain. Someone told me once that with greasy or waxy stains on carpets in the home then one way to get them out is to use brown paper and a warm iron. You lay the brown paper verthe staini and then run the warm iron over the top. The iron melts the wax/grease and it is drawn up into the brown paper.
Baking soda plus water should do the trick. If all else fails, consult a professional
I’ve had really good luck with liquid laundry detergent and a little warm water. (without bleach, of course) Hope this helps.
love blog !
I had purple silly putty squished in my carpet in my daughters room.
The carpet cleaners I called did get it out. Even they weren’t sure if they could get it out but it did come clean.
Good luck!
Hey! Lip gloss stains are hard to remove.I believe Lara Fransen has given you the tips that might work!Share with us if it really goes off! I will note it down and it might come in handy in the future.
Naphtha is something I hadn’t considered. I do remember that the Fallen Angels burn it in Milton’s Paradise Lost – I’m sure that Satan and Belezebub weren’t trying to clean carpet stains made by Hello Kitty lip gloss though – that would have made for a very different book.
You could try a commercial spot and stain remover, but read the label very carefully. I’d suggest getting a pro in to look at it though – the effectiveness can be affected by the depth of the pile, the type of fibres and so forth.
Yeah lip gloss stains are hard to remove, but I guess they disappear the more you wash the carpet..Those hello kitty lip gloss is cool by the way…I want to buy it too!
Lip gloss is oil based, not water based. Therefore water will not penetrate the lip gloss, nor will it break it down. Google a non domestic version of a citrus solvent such as citrusolv. I’m a professional carpet cleaner and this is what I use. Work the citrusolv into the lip gloss using a metal spoon and watch it work it’s magic. Good luck!
Lip gloss should not be that hard to get out.I switched to laminate flooring just to curtail the messes.
Help! I accidentally (obviously!) spilled a whole tub of hot hair removal wax on my carpet. I googled some removal tips and found a suggestion to use wart freezing spray to freeze it (since ice won’t work on hair wax), break it, then vacuum up the rest, but I cannot find wart freezing spray anywhere. We’re not talking about a little dribble of wax here, but a whole pool of it, about 15cm in diameter, probably about 4mm deep. It has since gone cold, but is sticky, not hard. Please let me know what you think can be done to remove this wax or else I will be paying my apartment management company for a whole new carpet in the living room! Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!
You can try club soda instead of vinegar if the strong smell is a concern. Just make sure to remove any solid matter from the spill. Pour club soda on the stain and you might have to scrub a little hard but it should work.
Citrus will work wonders for oil based lip gloss.
Maybe you can hire some professional carpet cleaner that would do the job for you. In that way you can assure that your carpet is in good hand. You need also to find those company that has a very good reputation in the name of carpet cleaning.
Oh no..that’s horrible. I suggest find someone professional who can clean your carpet. I’m sure that’ll do.
You need a good solvent – Job done!

Oh no! I agree with trying baking soda, however you should really give your carpet a good clean afterwards as well. Try some professional standard shampoos!
In this case, a combination of spot removers might be necessary. I would try a solvent cleaner to remove the oil based part of the product, then rinse the carpet with a spray bottle of water and blot dry.
If the color remains, which would be the dye portion of the product, I suggest a red dye remover, and follow the steps outlined in the video of the link I highlighted.
How about getting vicks off leather couch and Laminate flooring. Need ideas PLEASE! as our lovely child put it everywhere.
Well, let’s see. Vicks is an oil-based goop, so you’ll need something that is an effective degreaser. Start off with some baking soda and sprinkle it generously over the effected area. Then you’ll need a solvent – I’d go for a general green cleaner like Method or Shaklee or Dr. Bonners. Get your rag and warm water. You’ll want dip your rag in the warm water, apply your cleaner to the rag and squeeze out excess moisture. Wipe. Repeat. Good luck!
You’re right about it containing petroleum. There are also dyes, oil, pigment, emulsifier, and wax. There is a step-by-step guide on how to remove lipstick from carpet on this carpet cleaning website.
