Q (from V.): I really hope that you can help me.. I want clean floors. Let me rephrase that, I DESPERATELY NEED CLEAN FLOORS! I have dark green ceramic tiles throughout the majority of my house and I cannot get them clean. I have tried almost every product, they either a: Do nothing or b: Leave streaks and smears all over the tile. I have tried 3 different mops and countless cleaners. When in utero. . .

May 5, 2008 | Pregnancy

Natural Awakenings Magazine has a great article this month titled What to Inspect When you’re Expecting. They list 10 tips for expecting moms to achieve a healthy pregnancy and give their baby the best start possible. What do they suggest? Everything from the basics, like regular prenatal check-ups, to less known hazards like avoiding foam-based nursery furniture to stay away from PBDEs. Eating organic ranks high on the list, as does avoiding pesticides. And going against every pregnant mom’s instinct to nest, they advise holding off on home improvement plans until after the baby is born - especially in homes built before 1978. One more interesting piece of advice? If it stinks, it stinks! In other words, trust your nose. Substances with a strong odor (like glue and paint, for example) contain chemicals that can be harmful to the developing fetus. Trust your sense of smell. And fortunately for us, pregnant women have a more sensitive sense of smell - just one more way our bodies protect our babies.

Ridding your kitchen of plastics?

April 24, 2008 | Organizing, Food & drink, Being Green

With the worries about the potential danger of plastics on the rise I’ve decided to eliminate a lot of my plastic containers from my kitchen. You know, the ones you use for EVERYTHING! That left me with a big empty cabinet and nothing to put our left overs in. I needed an idea quick, and a thrifty one at that since I can’t afford to go out and buy all glass storage containers! Here is what I came up with… (more…)

One more thing to fear

April 23, 2008 | Health, Shopping

As if endocrine-disrupting BPA in baby bottles and sippy cups, and pesticides in fruits and veggies, hormones and antibiotics in milk and meats, and drugs in our water weren’t enough for us to worry about as we try to protect our kids, a study done by the Michigan-based Ecology Center found high levels of toxins in car seats, from infant rear-facing car seats all the way up to belt-positioning boosters.
